Lighter Holiday Traffic for Martin Luther King Jr. Day

As Oklahoma City observes Martin Luther King Jr. Day today, Monday, January 19, 2026, commuters can expect a significantly lighter morning rush hour than usual. With schools, state offices, and city government buildings closed, the typical congestion on major arteries like I-235 and the Kilpatrick Turnpike has been minimal. However, several new and ongoing projects will affect those traveling through the downtown core and major highway interchanges throughout the day.

Major Downtown Closure Begins Today

Drivers in the downtown area should be aware of a significant new traffic advisory starting today. North Broadway Avenue is closed between West Sheridan Avenue and West Main Street. This closure, required for utility work and the installation of a new manhole for the upcoming arena project, is expected to remain in place through February 28. While South Broadway Avenue remains open, those who usually use the North Broadway corridor should detour via Walker Avenue or Robinson Avenue to navigate the central business district.

Highway Construction and Interchange Alerts

Despite the holiday, several long-term highway projects continue to impact local travel. Motorists should keep the following alerts in mind:

  • I-40/I-44 Interchange: Eastbound and westbound I-40 remain narrowed over I-44 between Meridian Avenue and May Avenue. Bridge and pavement rehabilitation work in this area is expected to cause intermittent ramp closures through the spring.
  • I-44 at NW 10th St: The east and westbound I-44 off-ramps to NW 10th Street are currently closed for a bridge project and will remain inaccessible through summer 2026.
  • I-240 and I-35 Junction: Lane narrowing continues at this major South OKC interchange. The SE 74th Street/I-240 Service Road is closed to through traffic between Eastern Avenue and Crossroads Boulevard.
  • I-40 East (Midwest City): Traffic is narrowed to two lanes in each direction between I-240 and Town Center Drive near Douglas Boulevard. Southbound Douglas Boulevard to eastbound I-40 is currently closed.

Public Transit: Free Fare and Schedule Changes

EMBARK has announced that today is a Board-approved Fare Free Day. Rides on all OKC fixed-route buses, the OKC Streetcar, RAPID, and OKC PLUS are free of charge. However, commuters should note that OKC buses are operating on a weekend schedule today. The RAPID service is running at 30-minute frequencies until 7:00 p.m., while the OKC Streetcar will maintain its regular schedule until midnight. Transit Center Customer Service and the 235-RIDE call center are closed for the holiday.

Safe Commuting Tips

While traffic volumes are lower today, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation reminds drivers to maintain caution in work zones, especially where lane shifts and lack of shoulders are present on I-40 and I-240. Normal trash and recycling services for Monday have also been delayed until Wednesday, January 21, due to the holiday observation.
