Four firefighters injured as Ranger Road Fire spreads across Oklahoma Panhandle into southern Kansas

Fast-moving grassfires push across state lines amid high winds

Four firefighters were injured while responding to wind-driven wildfires burning in western Oklahoma and spreading into southern Kansas, as crews faced rapidly changing conditions on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2026. The injuries were reported during a wildfire outbreak that prompted evacuations, road closures and structural damage across multiple counties.

In Beaver County, Oklahoma, three firefighters were hurt when their fire truck rolled over while responding to a fire. All three were transported to a hospital. A fourth firefighter was hospitalized after a separate crash tied to the broader response. Officials have not released a comprehensive medical update on all four; one injured firefighter was reported to have suffered burns, and another was reported to have a serious head injury.

Ranger Road Fire leads acreage totals and crosses into Kansas

The largest incident in the region has been the Ranger Road Fire, which officials estimated had burned about 145,000 acres across Oklahoma and Kansas. The overall burned area across four Oklahoma counties reached more than 155,000 acres as multiple fires burned simultaneously, including the Stevens Fire in Texas County, the Side Road Fire in Texas County, and the 43 Road Fire in Woodward County.

Fire behavior was driven by powerful winds and dry fuels typical of late-winter fire seasons on the High Plains. Gusts exceeding 65 mph were observed during the height of the outbreak, hampering suppression and limiting aerial firefighting operations at times.

Evacuations, closures and reported damage in affected counties

Evacuation orders and warnings were issued for communities near the Oklahoma Panhandle and along the Oklahoma-Kansas line as the Ranger Road Fire advanced. In Kansas, evacuations were ordered for Englewood and Ashland as the fire moved north across the state line. In Oklahoma, evacuation actions were reported in Beaver, Texas and Woodward counties during the response period.

Local emergency officials also reported structural losses associated with the fires. In Woodward County, three structures were reported destroyed in connection with the 43 Road Fire, including two buildings at a U.S. Department of Agriculture facility. In Texas County, officials reported five structures destroyed in fires that included the Side Road Fire, which authorities said started after a seven-vehicle crash on U.S. 54.

  • Ranger Road Fire: approximately 145,000 acres burned across Oklahoma and Kansas
  • Stevens Fire (Texas County): approximately 5,000 acres burned
  • Side Road Fire (Texas County): approximately 3,300 acres burned
  • 43 Road Fire (Woodward County): approximately 2,000 acres burned

Emergency managers emphasized that wildfire acreage estimates can change as mapping improves and conditions evolve.

Officials urged residents in impacted areas to follow local evacuation instructions, avoid closed roads, and use 2-1-1 for non-emergency assistance while reserving 9-1-1 for emergencies.
