Hazardous Commute: Slick and Hazardous Conditions Reported on I-35 and I-40

Significant Winter Storm Impacts Oklahoma City Travel
Commuters in the Oklahoma City metro area are facing extremely difficult travel conditions this Tuesday, January 27, 2026. Following a major winter storm that has gripped the region since late last week, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) continues to discourage all non-essential travel. While road crews have been working around the clock to plow and treat primary routes, low temperatures have led to significant refreezing, creating widespread black ice and snow-packed surfaces across the city's major arteries.
Major Interstate and Highway Conditions
Major corridors including I-35 and I-40 are currently classified as slick and hazardous. ODOT reports that both interstates remain snow-packed from state line to state line, with particularly dangerous patches in the Oklahoma City metro. Travelers should expect significant delays and reduced speeds. Additional high-impact areas include:
- I-44: The interstate is narrowed between SW 44th St. and I-240 through spring 2026. Currently, the eastbound I-44 on-ramp from 74th St. is closed, and the road is narrowed to a single lane at SW 74th St.
- I-40: In Midwest City, the highway is narrowed to two lanes in each direction between I-240 and Town Center Dr. due to ongoing construction at Douglas Blvd.
- I-240: Drivers should be aware of narrowing at the I-35 interchange. Frontage roads and service roads near SE 59th St. and Pole Rd. are subject to intermittent closures.
- SH-152/Airport Rd: Ramps at Meridian Ave. are experiencing narrowing and intermittent closures for surface repairs, complicating access to Will Rogers World Airport.
EMBARK Public Transport and City Services
Public transportation is also heavily affected by the inclement weather. EMBARK has activated Level 2 Winter Weather Detours for all OKC bus, RAPID, and Norman bus services for today. These detours mean that buses are sticking to primary roads that have been treated, and many standard neighborhood stops are currently bypassed for safety. The Transit Center customer service window is operating on reduced hours from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
In addition to transit delays, the City of Oklahoma City has announced that all trash and recycling collections scheduled for today, Tuesday, have been postponed to Saturday, January 31. This decision was made to keep heavy collection vehicles off slick residential streets and to allow snow plows more room to operate.
Commuter Safety Recommendations
For those who must be on the roads today, officials recommend maintaining a distance of at least 200 feet behind snow plows and salt trucks. Do not attempt to pass these vehicles while they are in operation. Motorists should avoid using cruise control and should build in at least double the normal travel time to reach their destinations safely. Ensure your vehicle is clear of snow and ice before departing to maintain maximum visibility.
