I-40 Ramp Closures and Streetcar Suspension: Oklahoma City Traffic Update for Saturday, Feb. 21
Major Highway Alerts and I-40 Closures
Oklahoma City drivers are facing a busy weekend on the roads this Saturday, February 21, 2026. Significant construction projects and infrastructure upgrades are affecting several major arteries, including I-40 and key downtown corridors. Commuters and weekend travelers are advised to plan for extra travel time and consider alternative routes where possible.
One of the most impactful closures today is in Midwest City at the intersection of I-40 and Douglas Boulevard. South Douglas Blvd. is completely closed in both directions between SE 29th St. and Renny Rd. for a major resurfacing project. This closure includes all eastbound and westbound on-ramps and off-ramps at the I-40 and Douglas interchange. These restrictions will remain in place until Sunday, February 22, at 6:00 p.m. Drivers heading to the SSM Healthplex should note it is only accessible from the south via Douglas Blvd. during this period.
Further west in Yukon, the eastbound I-40 on-ramp from Garth Brooks Blvd. remains closed through 7:00 a.m. Monday morning for surface work. Additionally, Garth Brooks Blvd. is narrowed to a single lane in each direction under the I-40 bridge, a condition expected to persist through the summer of 2026 as part of ongoing resurfacing efforts.
Downtown Alerts and Public Transport
Public transport users and downtown visitors will notice significant changes today. The Oklahoma City Streetcar service has been suspended and will remain out of commission until February 26. This interruption is necessary to facilitate electrical work related to the construction of the new OKC Arena. In the interim, EMBARK is providing a bus shuttle service along the Downtown Loop, running every 25 minutes. Please be aware that the Bricktown Loop is not operational during this suspension, and real-time tracking for the shuttles is currently unavailable.
Downtown drivers should also watch for lane closures on Sheridan Avenue and Reno Avenue. One eastbound lane on Sheridan is blocked between Ron Norick Blvd. and E.K. Gaylord Blvd., while a westbound lane on Reno is closed from E.K. Gaylord to Robinson Avenue. Detour signs are in place to assist with traffic flow in the arena construction zone.
Ongoing Highway Construction and Lane Reductions
The I-240 and I-35 interchange continues to be a bottleneck as part of a multi-phase improvement project. Drivers should expect the following conditions:
- I-240 is narrowed to two lanes near the I-35 interchange with no shoulders.
- The SE 74th St. service road remains closed between Eastern Ave. and Crossroads Blvd. through spring 2026.
- I-44 off-ramps at NW 10th St. are closed for a bridge replacement project.
- SH-152 (Airport Rd.) remains closed between Banner Rd. and Cemetery Rd. for total reconstruction, with detours utilizing US-81 and I-40.
- NE 23rd St. is narrowed to one lane in each direction between Broadway Ave. and Western Ave. for a streetscape project.
As weather conditions remain clear but cool today, ODOT urges all motorists to exercise extreme caution in work zones and stay alert for construction crews working near active travel lanes.
