I-44 Lane Reductions and Holiday Travel to Delay OKC Commuters This Valentine's Weekend

Valentine's Day Traffic and Road Conditions
Today is Saturday, February 14, 2026. Commuters and residents should prepare for moderate to heavy traffic across the Oklahoma City metro area as Valentine’s Day celebrations begin this afternoon. While the significant winter storm that impacted the region earlier this month has moved out, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) continues to warn of potential potholes and asphalt degradation caused by the recent freeze-thaw cycle. Those traveling for evening plans are advised to exercise caution on bridge decks and shaded overpasses, where black ice could potentially form if temperatures dip after sunset.
Major Highway Alerts: Southwest I-44 and I-40
Significant ongoing construction projects are expected to slow travel today, particularly in the southwest quadrant of the city. Drivers on I-44 will experience the most noticeable delays near Southwest 74th Street, where the interstate remains narrowed to a single lane for bridge rehabilitation. This project, aimed at improving safety near Will Rogers World Airport, is currently in a critical phase and is not expected to see full lane restoration until late February.
- I-44 at NW 10th St: Both the eastbound and westbound off-ramps to Northwest 10th Street are fully closed for a city bridge project. This closure is scheduled to remain in place through summer 2026; motorists should utilize Agnew Avenue or Pennsylvania Avenue as alternatives.
- I-40/I-44 "K" Interchange: Expect nightly lane narrowing and intermittent ramp closures near the junction west of downtown. Structural upgrades to the interchange bridges are currently creating unpredictable merge patterns.
- Midwest City I-40: Lane shifts and narrowing continue between I-240 and Town Center Drive. Drivers are urged to maintain a steady speed and avoid distractions, as there are no emergency shoulders available in this work zone.
Downtown and Suburban Road Impacts
In the central business district and surrounding suburbs, several localized closures are worth noting for those heading to events or dinners:
- Downtown OKC: One eastbound lane on Sheridan Avenue (from Ron Norick Blvd to E.K. Gaylord Blvd) and one westbound lane on Reno Avenue (from E.K. Gaylord Blvd to Robinson Ave) are closed for preliminary work related to the new arena construction.
- Moore: SE 4th Street remains fully closed to through traffic between Broadway Avenue and Tower Drive for a railroad bridge replacement project.
- Edmond: The intersection of Danforth Road and Kelly Avenue is restricted to one lane in each direction for widening.
- Yukon: Resurfacing work on Garth Brooks Boulevard under I-40 has reduced traffic to a single lane in both directions.
Public Transit Update
EMBARK bus services are operating on a standard Saturday schedule today. While the OKC Streetcar is currently running its regular loops, passengers should be aware that service will be temporarily suspended starting this coming Wednesday, February 18, for a four-day period to accommodate downtown construction. For today's festivities, streetcar riders should expect higher-than-normal wait times due to pedestrian volume near the Myriad Gardens and Scissortail Park.
