Lane Narrowing on I-240 and Major Kilpatrick Turnpike Widening Highlight Tuesday Commute

Morning Traffic Overview and Major Projects
Oklahoma City commuters should prepare for significant construction activity and lane restrictions across several major arteries this Tuesday, March 10, 2026. With several long-term infrastructure projects in full swing, including the massive ACCESS Oklahoma turnpike expansion, drivers are encouraged to allow for an extra 10 to 15 minutes during peak travel times, especially in the northern and southern sectors of the metro.
Highways and Interstates
- I-240 at I-35 Interchange: Significant bottlenecks are expected at the I-240 and I-35 junction. I-240 remains narrowed to just two lanes in each direction with no shoulders. Additionally, the S.E. 74th St. and I-240 service road is closed to through traffic between Eastern Avenue and Crossroads Boulevard. This closure is expected to last through the spring.
- John Kilpatrick Turnpike: A $23 million widening project is currently active between West Wilshire Boulevard (mile marker 116) and Northwest 122nd Street (mile marker 120). Crews are working to expand the turnpike to six lanes, which includes bridge work over the Northwest Expressway.
- I-44 at N.W. 10th St.: Both the east and westbound I-44 off-ramps to N.W. 10th Street remain closed for a bridge rehabilitation project. This closure is slated to continue through the summer of 2026.
- I-40 Midwest City: Expect lane shifts and narrowed lanes between I-240 and Town Center Drive. Drivers should be particularly cautious as merge distances have been significantly shortened in this work zone.
- I-35 Safety Repairs: Southbound I-35 will experience temporary lane narrowing between I-40 and S.E. 15th Street from 9:00 a.m. to noon today for essential safety device repairs.
Public Transit and Streetcar Alerts
EMBARK riders should take note of several service adjustments today. Route 007 and 008 are experiencing stop closures near N. May Avenue and NW 38th Street due to a combination of construction and recent maintenance. Furthermore, the OKC Streetcar remains free to the public today as part of the six-month fare-free pilot program that began earlier this year.
Commuter Deadlines
Today, March 10, is the final day for the public to submit comments regarding the I-35 corridor study between Norman and Moore. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation is seeking final input on the preferred alternative for widening this stretch of the interstate to improve long-term traffic flow. Commuters who frequently use this route are encouraged to participate in the virtual open house before the deadline tonight.
