Lane Reductions on I-40 and Streetcar Disruptions Highlight Thursday Commute

Morning Commute Overview
Commuters in the Oklahoma City metro area should prepare for significant delays this Thursday, February 19, 2026, due to several major infrastructure projects and transit modifications. Major arteries including I-40 in Midwest City and I-35 in North Oklahoma City are currently experiencing lane restrictions that will impact both morning and evening travel times.
Major Highway Impacts: I-40 and I-35
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) continues to report heavy impacts on I-40 in the Midwest City corridor. Drivers should anticipate the following:
- I-40 Midwest City: Both eastbound and westbound I-40 are narrowed to two lanes between I-240 and Town Center Drive. This zone features lane shifts and intermittent ramp closures. Authorities advise using I-240 or US-62 (NE 23rd St.) as alternate routes to avoid peak congestion.
- I-35 North OKC: Northbound I-35 remains narrowed between Hefner Rd. and NE 122nd St. Additionally, the northbound off-ramps to both Hefner Rd. and NE 122nd St. are subject to closures for ongoing signage and safety improvements.
- I-44/Airport Rd: Ongoing corridor widening continues to constrict I-44 and SH-152 (Airport Rd.) near SW 44th St. The eastbound I-44 on-ramp from 74th St. remains closed through the spring season.
Edmond and Yukon Local Roadworks
Local commuters in the northern and western suburbs should account for extended travel times at major intersections:
- Edmond: The intersection of Danforth Rd. and Kelly Ave. is narrowed to a single lane in all directions as part of an intersection expansion project. This bottleneck is expected to last through the spring.
- Yukon: Garth Brooks Blvd. is narrowed to one lane in each direction under the I-40 bridge for resurfacing work. Drivers exiting I-40 in this area should expect slow-moving traffic throughout the day.
- Moore: SE 4th St. (SH-37) remains closed between Broadway Ave. and Tower Dr. for railroad bridge construction. Detours are marked via local collectors.
EMBARK Public Transit Alerts
Public transit riders face significant changes to downtown service today. Most notably, the OKC Streetcar Downtown Loop is temporarily suspended to facilitate electrical work for the new OKC Arena project. A bus shuttle is currently operating in place of the streetcar every 25 minutes. Passengers should look for head signs reading "OKC Streetcar Service-Downtown Loop." Please note that the Bricktown Loop is also non-operational during this maintenance window.
Safety Reminder
With multiple work zones active across the city, ODOT urges drivers to maintain focus and reduce speeds. Be aware that workers will be present on the shoulders of I-40 and I-235 for routine testing and surface repairs. Planning your route ahead of time and allowing an extra 15 to 20 minutes for cross-town travel is highly recommended for today's commute.
