Major Construction Delays on I-44 and I-240 Highlight Wednesday Commute

Wednesday Morning Traffic Overview
Commuters in Oklahoma City should prepare for significant travel time increases this Wednesday, January 21, 2026, as several multi-week highway projects and local street rehabilitations hit their peak. Heavy congestion is currently reported on the city's southwest side, particularly near the Will Rogers World Airport corridor and the I-240 interchange. Drivers are encouraged to allow at least 15 to 20 minutes of extra time for their morning and evening commutes.
Major Highway and Interchange Alerts
- I-44 and SW 74th Street: A major corridor widening project has reduced eastbound I-44 to a single lane near Southwest 74th Street. Additionally, the eastbound on-ramp from 74th Street remains closed. This work is expected to cause substantial backups through late February, affecting those traveling toward the downtown area from the airport.
- I-240 and I-35 Interchange: As part of a multi-phase improvement project, I-240 remains narrowed to two lanes in both directions at the I-35 junction. Shoulders have been removed in this work zone, and the SE 74th Street service road is closed to through traffic between Eastern Avenue and Crossroads Boulevard.
- I-40 Midwest City: In the Midwest City area, I-40 is narrowed to two lanes in each direction between I-240 and Town Center Drive near Douglas Boulevard. Intermittent ramp closures and lane shifts are in effect, and the southbound Douglas Boulevard ramp to eastbound I-40 remains closed.
- I-44 at NW 10th Street: Both the eastbound and westbound off-ramps to NW 10th Street are closed for a long-term bridge project. This closure is slated to continue through the summer.
Surface Street and Local Roadworks
Beyond the interstates, local drivers will face bottlenecks on several key arterials. NE 23rd Street (SH-66) is currently narrowed to one lane in each direction between North Lee Avenue and North Harvey Avenue for utility and street improvements. In Edmond, the intersection of Danforth Road and Kelly Avenue is experiencing delays due to a lane reduction in all directions for intersection expansion. Additionally, in Yukon, Garth Brooks Boulevard is narrowed to a single lane under I-40, which may impact access to the nearby health centers and retail hubs.
