Major Highway Projects and Streetcar Suspension Impact Tuesday Commute
Tuesday Traffic Overview
Commuters across the Oklahoma City metro should prepare for significant travel adjustments this morning, Tuesday, February 24, 2026. While no major multi-vehicle accidents have been reported during the early morning hours, ongoing long-term construction projects on major arteries and a significant suspension of the downtown streetcar system are expected to cause localized congestion and delays.
Public Transport: Streetcar Suspension
The most notable alert for downtown commuters is the continued suspension of the Oklahoma City Streetcar service. This interruption has been extended through Thursday, February 26, to accommodate critical electrical work associated with the construction of the new OKC Arena. For those who rely on the Downtown Loop:
- Shuttle Service: EMBARK is providing a bus shuttle to replace streetcar service. Look for buses with head signs reading "OKC Streetcar Service-Downtown Loop."
- Frequency: Shuttles are scheduled to run every 25 minutes.
- Service Note: The Bricktown Loop is currently not operational during this suspension. Real-time tracking for the shuttle may be unavailable, so please allow for an extra 15 to 20 minutes for your downtown transit.
Major Highway Bottlenecks
Several high-traffic corridors remain under construction, narrowing lanes and removing shoulders. Drivers should exercise extreme caution in the following areas:
- I-240 at I-35: This multi-phase interchange project continues to narrow I-240 to two lanes in both directions near the I-35 junction. Lanes are narrow with no shoulders, significantly increasing the risk of delays if any minor incidents occur.
- I-40 in Midwest City: Expect delays between I-240 and Town Center Drive. I-40 is narrowed to two lanes in each direction with intermittent ramp closures. Commuters are encouraged to use I-240 or US-62 (N.E. 23rd St.) as alternate routes.
- I-44 & SH-152 (Airport Road): Narrowing persists on I-44 between S.W. 44th St. and I-240. The eastbound I-44 on-ramp from S.W. 74th St. remains closed as part of the corridor widening project.
- I-44 at N.W. 10th St.: The off-ramps to N.W. 10th St. remain closed for a bridge replacement project. This closure is expected to last through the summer.
Local Arterial Alerts
In addition to highway work, several local surface streets are undergoing improvements:
- N.E. 23rd Street: Intermittent narrowing continues between Broadway Ave. and Western Ave. for a streetscape project. Nearby, the outbound bus stop at N.E. 23rd and Broadway is currently closed.
- SH-4 (Piedmont Road): Drivers should be alert for changing conditions between N.W. 122nd and SH-3/NW Expressway, where traffic has been moved to a new alignment.
Commuter Resource
Finally, for residents with outstanding traffic-related issues, the City's "Operation Fresh Start" is active this week. This program allows individuals to clear outstanding warrants for traffic violations at a reduced rate without fear of arrest, which may be of interest to those visiting the Municipal Court today.
