Major Interchange Work and Streetcar Suspensions Lead Monday Commute

Morning Traffic Overview

Commuters in Oklahoma City should prepare for a busy Monday morning as several long-term infrastructure projects and a significant transit service suspension impact travel across the metro area. With major work continuing at the I-240 and I-35 interchange and ongoing bridge repairs in Midwest City, early departures are highly recommended for those traveling through the southern and eastern corridors.

Interstate and Highway Roadworks

Several major arteries are experiencing significant lane reductions and ramp closures today:

  • I-240 & I-35 Interchange: As part of a multi-phase improvement project, I-240 remains narrowed to two lanes at the I-35 junction. Drivers should note that the S.E. 74th St./I-240 Service Road is closed to through traffic between Eastern Avenue and Crossroads Boulevard.
  • I-40 in Midwest City: Both eastbound and westbound I-40 are restricted to two lanes between I-240 and Town Center Drive. Additionally, the S. Douglas Boulevard bridge over I-40 remains closed, along with several on- and off-ramps in the area.
  • I-44 Closures: The east and westbound I-44 off-ramps to N.W. 10th Street are closed for a bridge project. Further south, expect lane shifts and narrowing on I-44 between S.W. 44th Street and I-240 near the Airport Road (SH-152) junction.
  • I-40 in Yukon: Garth Brooks Boulevard is narrowed to one lane in each direction under I-40, which may cause stacking on the interstate exit ramps during peak hours.

Public Transport and Streetcar Alerts

EMBARK has announced that the Oklahoma City Streetcar Downtown Loop service remains suspended through Thursday, February 26. This interruption is necessary for electrical work supporting the construction of the new OKC Arena. In the interim, a bus shuttle is serving all streetcar stops on the Downtown Loop, with vehicles arriving approximately every 25 minutes. The Bricktown Loop is also non-operational during this window.

Several bus stops are currently closed due to nearby streetscape work, including Stop #3936 at N.E. 23rd St and N. Broadway Avenue. Riders are encouraged to check the mobile app for real-time bus locations, though tracking for the streetcar shuttle is currently unavailable.

Surface Street Restrictions

In addition to highway work, local commuters should watch for these city street impacts:

  • N.E. 23rd St: Traffic is narrowed to one lane in each direction between Broadway Avenue and Western Avenue for a streetscape project.
  • SH-37 in Moore: East and westbound SH-37 (S.E. 4th St.) is closed between Broadway Avenue and Tower Drive for railroad bridge construction.
  • SH-152 (Union City): All lanes remain closed between Banner Road and Cemetery Road for total road reconstruction.

Drivers are advised to utilize I-240 or N.E. 23rd Street as alternate routes for east-west travel where I-40 congestion is heaviest.
