Interstate Disruptions: I-40 and I-44 Face Lane Restrictions

Commuters in the Oklahoma City metro area should prepare for significant travel delays this Tuesday, February 17, 2026, as the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) continues several high-impact infrastructure projects. A primary concern for evening commuters will be on westbound I-40, which is scheduled to shrink to a single lane from I-235 to Shields Blvd. This reduction is necessary for critical surface repairs and will remain in effect through Wednesday morning. Additionally, the right shoulder of westbound I-40 at the I-335/Kickapoo Turnpike remains closed today for routine testing.

In Southwest Oklahoma City, the ongoing corridor widening project on I-44 continues to affect daily travel. Eastbound I-44 is currently reduced to a single lane near Southwest 74th St. Commuters should also note that the eastbound I-44 on-ramps from 74th St. are closed, a restriction expected to last through the end of the month. In Midwest City, while early morning restrictions on I-40 between Hudiburg Dr. and Air Depot Blvd. were lifted at 6:00 a.m., the stretch of I-40 between I-240 and Town Center Drive remains narrowed to two lanes in both directions with no available shoulders.

Regional Route Alerts: Norman and Moore Work Zones

Travelers heading through Norman today will encounter lane reductions on SH-9E. From 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., traffic will be limited to one lane in each direction between US-77 and South Jenkins Ave. for bridge work. Simultaneously, a separate bridge replacement project on SH-9E near US-77 over Bishop Creek is causing intermittent narrowing that is expected to continue through the early part of this year.

In Moore, SH-37 (Southeast 4th St.) remains fully closed to all traffic between Broadway Ave. and Tower Drive for a railroad bridge project. Drivers are advised to utilize 12th St. or Main St. as alternative east-west routes. Furthermore, SH-152 near Union City is completely closed between Banner Rd. and Cemetery Rd. for reconstruction; through traffic should detour via US-81 to I-40.

Public Transit and Downtown Construction

Downtown Oklahoma City continues to see utility-related closures. North Broadway Avenue is currently closed between West Sheridan Avenue and West Main Street. Additionally, Sheridan Avenue is intermittently narrowed to a single lane where it passes under the BNSF bridge. These closures support the ongoing installation of new utility infrastructure and the removal of debris from the former Myriad site.

  • EMBARK Bus Alerts: Route 011 (S. 29 St. Crosstown) currently has multiple stop closures on South High Avenue between SE 15th and SE 25th St. due to active construction.
  • Streetcar Service: Today is the final day of regular service for the OKC Streetcar before a scheduled four-day suspension. Starting tomorrow, February 18, the Downtown Loop will be replaced by a bus shuttle to allow for electrical work near the new arena site.

Commuters are encouraged to allow for an extra 15 to 20 minutes of travel time, particularly during the afternoon rush hour, and to observe all posted speed limits within active work zones.
