Midday Narrowing on Lake Hefner Parkway and I-40 Bottlenecks Expected This Friday

Friday Morning Traffic Outlook
Commuters in Oklahoma City should prepare for a mix of temporary maintenance work and long-term construction projects that will impact travel times throughout today, Friday, February 27, 2026. While the early morning rush is expected to move relatively well, a specific midday project on the Lake Hefner Parkway and ongoing major interstate reconstructions will require strategic route planning.
Major Artery Alerts: SH-74 and I-40
- SH-74/Lake Hefner Parkway: Expect significant slowing during the midday hours. Northbound lanes will be narrowed from Hefner Rd. to N.W. 122nd St. starting at 9 a.m. today through 1 p.m. for essential surface work. Drivers are encouraged to use N. May Ave. or N. Pennsylvania Ave. as alternatives during this window.
- I-40 (Midwest City): The bottleneck at Douglas Blvd. remains a primary concern. I-40 is narrowed to two lanes in each direction between I-240 and Town Center Dr. Additionally, a major closure begins at 8 p.m. tonight, where Douglas Blvd. will be closed over I-40 through the weekend for striping and bridge work.
- I-44 at S.W. 74th St.: Overnight overhead structure work is concluding early this morning. While lanes should reopen by 6 a.m., residual congestion may remain near the S.W. 74th St. on-ramp to eastbound I-44.
Interchange Projects and Long-Term Closures
The multi-phase interchange improvement at I-240 and I-35 continues to restrict traffic. Currently, I-240 is narrowed to two lanes with no shoulders at the I-35 junction. In the Moore area, S.E. 4th St. (SH-37) remains fully closed between Broadway Ave. and Tower Dr. due to the ongoing railroad bridge project. For those traveling west of the city, SH-152 is closed between Banner Rd. and Cemetery Rd. near Union City; motorists should detour using US-81 to I-40.
Public Transport and EMBARK Updates
EMBARK has announced that the temporary service suspension for the OKC Streetcar Downtown Loop concluded yesterday. While service is expected to resume today, riders should be aware that some downtown street closures remain near Sheridan and Reno Avenues due to arena construction. Additionally, commuters using Route 011 should note that several stops along S. High Ave. are currently closed due to construction, and mechanical issues may cause minor delays on Routes 003 and 016 this morning.
Commuter Advice
With several projects shifting to active status during the late morning, we recommend completing cross-town travel before 9 a.m. if possible. Always obey posted speed limits in work zones, as fines double when workers are present.
