NW 23rd Street and Major Highway Construction Impact Sunday Commutes

Oklahoma City drivers should prepare for several significant lane closures and ongoing construction projects this Sunday, February 8, 2026. While Sunday traffic is typically lighter than weekday peaks, recent utility emergencies and massive highway interchange projects continue to disrupt standard travel patterns across the metro. Commuters are advised to plan for extra travel time, particularly on the southwest and east sides of the city.

Local Alert: NW 23rd Street Westbound Restrictions

The most immediate concern for downtown and midtown travelers is on Northwest 23rd Street. Following a 16-inch water main break reported on February 7, city utility crews have implemented lane closures for all westbound traffic between Harvey Avenue and Hudson Avenue. Drivers heading west toward the Uptown 23rd District are required to detour at Harvey. While repair work on the line was slated for completion late Saturday, lane restrictions often persist through the following day to ensure pavement stability and safety. Eastbound lanes are expected to remain open, but motorists should be cautious of workers near the median.

Southwest OKC: I-44 Narrowing Near Will Rogers Airport

On the southwest side, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) continues a significant corridor widening and bridge rehabilitation project. Eastbound I-44 (which runs north in this section) remains narrowed to a single lane near the Southwest 74th Street junction. Additionally, the eastbound I-44 on-ramp from Southwest 74th Street is currently closed to traffic. This work, vital for the growing airport corridor, is scheduled to remain in this configuration through late February. Travelers heading to Will Rogers World Airport should allow an extra 15 minutes to navigate potential bottlenecks in this zone.

Major Highway Interchange and Corridor Updates

  • I-240 at I-35: A multi-phase interchange improvement project continues to affect the south metro. Both east and westbound I-240 are narrowed to two lanes at the I-35 junction, with no available shoulders. Drivers are also reminded that the Southeast 74th Street/I-240 service road is closed to through traffic between Eastern Avenue and Crossroads Boulevard.
  • I-40 in Midwest City: Lane shifts and reductions are active between I-240 and Town Center Drive near Douglas Boulevard. The southbound Douglas Boulevard ramp to eastbound I-40 remains closed, and those attempting to access the area from the Hruskocy Gate should follow posted detours.
  • I-44 at NW 10th Street: Both the east and westbound I-44 off-ramps to Northwest 10th Street are closed for a bridge project that is expected to continue through the summer of 2026.

Public Transit and Streetcar Information

For those looking to avoid construction entirely, EMBARK offers several transit alternatives. The OKC Streetcar is currently operating under a free-fare pilot program, allowing residents and visitors to ride without a fare through July 2026. However, bus riders should note that the RAPID Northwest line currently has a temporary stop closure at stop 4243 due to ongoing construction. Riders are encouraged to use the EMBARK mobile app to check real-time schedules and arrival times before heading to their stops.

Safe travels this Sunday, Oklahoma City. Remember to merge early and stay alert for construction crews in all active work zones.
