OKC Streetcar Suspension and Major I-40 Lane Reductions: Friday, February 20 Commute Guide
Morning Commute Outlook for Friday, February 20, 2026
Commuters in the Oklahoma City metro area should prepare for significant disruptions today, particularly those relying on public transit downtown or traveling through Midwest City. A combination of major infrastructure projects and transit maintenance will impact travel times throughout the morning and evening peaks.
Public Transit: Streetcar Suspension and Bus Detours
A major service alert remains in effect for downtown travelers. The EMBARK OKC Streetcar Downtown Loop is temporarily suspended through Sunday, February 22. This closure is necessary to accommodate critical electrical work supporting the new OKC Arena project. In the interim, a bus shuttle is operating along the Downtown Loop every 25 minutes. Please look for buses with head signs reading “OKC Streetcar Service-Downtown Loop.”
- Bricktown Loop: Service is completely suspended for the duration of this project.
- Route 011: Multiple stops along S. High Ave between SE 15th St and SE 25th St remain closed due to ongoing construction. Inbound and outbound riders should check for temporary boarding locations.
Major Interstate and Highway Restrictions
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) has several long-term and immediate projects affecting highway capacity today:
- I-40 (Midwest City): Expect heavy delays between Hudiburg Dr. and Air Depot Blvd. Eastbound lanes are reduced to a single lane for bridge repairs. Additionally, I-40 remains narrowed to two lanes in both directions near Douglas Blvd. with intermittent ramp closures still in effect.
- I-44 (Northwest OKC): The off-ramps to NW 10th St remain closed for a city bridge project scheduled to last through the summer. Commuters are advised to use NW 23rd St or I-40 as alternatives.
- SH-152 (Union City): This highway remains fully closed between Banner Rd. and Cemetery Rd. for total reconstruction. Drivers should detour using US-81 to I-40.
- SH-9E (Norman): Traffic is limited to a single lane near US-77 for bridge replacement work.
Arterial Street Updates
Local surface street traffic will also face restrictions in several key corridors:
- NE 23rd St: Lanes are narrowed to one in each direction between N. Lee Ave. and N. Harvey Ave. Additionally, intermittent lane closures are expected between Broadway Ave. and Western Ave. for an ongoing streetscape project.
- Garth Brooks Blvd (Yukon): Traffic is restricted to one lane in each direction between Andrew Dr. and Health Center Parkway. This configuration is expected to remain until summer 2026.
- Edmond: Expansion work continues at the intersection of Danforth Rd. and Kelly Ave., with lanes narrowed in all directions.
Commuters are encouraged to allow an extra 15 to 20 minutes for travel through these work zones and to remain alert for workers and equipment near the roadway.
