Oklahoma City Government Adjusts Operations Amid Winter Storm; Council Meets Today

Winter Weather Impacts Municipal Schedule
Oklahoma City government operations are facing significant adjustments today, Tuesday, January 27, 2026, as a winter storm has brought icy conditions and freezing temperatures to the region. While some essential services and scheduled political sessions have moved forward, the City has implemented several cancellations and delays to ensure the safety of residents and municipal employees.
City Council and Public Trust Meetings
The Oklahoma City Council was scheduled to convene for its regular session at 8:30 a.m. today at the City Council Chamber. While the session remained on the official calendar, other related government activities were significantly curtailed. The City of Oklahoma City reported the following regarding public meetings today:
- The Oklahoma City Water Utilities Trust meeting was listed to proceed as part of the morning's scheduled business.
- The Oklahoma City Riverfront Redevelopment Authority meeting, originally slated for today, was officially canceled due to the inclement weather.
- State-level political activity within the city was also impacted, with the Oklahoma Senate announcing a delayed start time of 10:00 a.m. for its proceedings at the State Capitol.
Widespread Service Disruptions and Closures
Administrative and judicial functions of the city government have been the most heavily affected by the winter conditions. Presiding Judge Donald O. Kiffin announced the cancellation of all Oklahoma City Municipal Court sessions for today. All cases scheduled for this date will be continued without a fee, and parties will be notified of new court dates. Additionally, Oklahoma County offices and the courthouse delayed their opening until 10:00 a.m.
Public works and recreation departments have also adjusted their operations:
- Tuesday trash and recycling collection has been moved to Saturday, January 31, to keep heavy collection vehicles off slick neighborhood streets.
- OKC Parks community centers, gyms, and performing arts centers are closed today.
- Willa D. Johnson Recreation Center and the Will Rogers Senior Center remain open during regular hours to serve the public.
Mayor and Upcoming Political Milestones
While the City Council manages local responses to the storm, Mayor David Holt is currently out of the city, serving in his national capacity. Mayor Holt is in Washington, D.C., where he is presiding over the 94th Winter Meeting of the United States Conference of Mayors. As the President of the organization, he is leading discussions with mayors from across the country on urban policy and federal partnerships.
Looking ahead, city officials are reminding residents of the upcoming mayoral election on February 10. Despite today's weather-related closures, the city is continuing preparations for the vote, alongside a penalty reduction program for residents with outstanding municipal warrants issued on or before December 31, 2022.
