Oklahoma City police arrest man after 11-year-old discovers him asleep in family bed

Incident reported at northwest Oklahoma City rental home
Oklahoma City police arrested a man after a child found him asleep inside a residence, an incident that escalated into a confrontation and resulted in multiple alleged criminal complaints.
The encounter occurred in northwest Oklahoma City near Northwest 14th Street and Portland Avenue. Police identified the suspect as 37-year-old Devron Short. Investigators said the resident returned home, noticed damage at the front door, and went inside, where he discovered Short sleeping in the resident’s bed. The child in the home was 11 years old, police said.
What police say happened inside the house
Authorities said that when Short woke up, he allegedly swung at the resident but missed. Police said the resident was able to restrain Short on the ground and call 911. Officers then took Short into custody.
Police reported that Short was arrested on multiple complaints, including breaking and entering. Investigators also estimated property damage at about $1,500.
Neighbors describe a pattern at the address
A neighbor told police the incident was not the first time Short had been found inside the home. The neighbor said Short previously lived there with his parents, but that they moved out months earlier. The same neighbor reported calling police multiple times after seeing Short enter the property.
The neighbor also said Short had repeatedly entered through a back window. Police said the suspect removed security bars that had been installed and broke out a back window to get inside. Investigators also reported damage to a deadbolt on the front door.
