Two Oklahoma arms recognized after decisive first weekend

Oklahoma pitchers LJ Mercurius and Cord Rager earned Southeastern Conference weekly honors following the Sooners’ 3–0 start at the Shriners Children’s College Showdown at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. The awards came after Oklahoma opened the 2026 season with wins over Texas Tech, Oklahoma State and TCU, holding each opponent to three runs or fewer while scoring at least 10 runs in every game.

Mercurius was selected as the SEC Co-Pitcher of the Week, while Rager was named SEC Co-Freshman of the Week. The recognitions arrived after Oklahoma’s weekend rotation produced three commanding starts that set the tone for a sweep in the season-opening event.

Mercurius’ Bedlam debut: strikeouts and early control

Mercurius, a right-hander in his Oklahoma debut, delivered 5 1/3 innings against Oklahoma State and struck out 12. He allowed one run on three hits with two walks as the Sooners won 10–1. The outing featured multiple high-strikeout frames and limited hard contact, helping Oklahoma separate early and keep its bullpen usage manageable in the second game of the weekend.

Mercurius arrived at Oklahoma via transfer after pitching at UNLV, where he was recognized in 2025 with a Mountain West Pitcher of the Week award and earned a spot on the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. Oklahoma added him to a staff seeking consistent front-end production against SEC competition in the program’s second season in the league.

Rager’s first college win closes the weekend

Rager, a freshman left-hander from Maypearl, Texas, anchored the final game of the event, working five innings with eight strikeouts in Oklahoma’s 12–2 win over TCU in seven innings. He permitted one run on two hits with three walks, helping Oklahoma limit a TCU team that entered the weekend with multiple wins over ranked opponents.

Listed as a two-way player (left-handed pitcher/infielder), Rager joined Oklahoma as a highly regarded Texas high school prospect. His first weekend role underscored Oklahoma’s early-season willingness to deploy young pitching in high-leverage settings away from home.

Arlington results and what the honors signal

  • Feb. 13: Oklahoma 10, Texas Tech 3
  • Feb. 14: Oklahoma 10, Oklahoma State 1
  • Feb. 15: Oklahoma 12, TCU 2 (7 innings)

Weekly conference awards are inherently tied to short samples, but the combination of swing-and-miss performance from Mercurius and an immediate impact start from Rager reflects early depth in Oklahoma’s pitching staff. With the schedule moving quickly from neutral-site play to regular-season series, the Sooners’ opening weekend established both a high run-prevention standard and clear early roles for two arms now carrying SEC recognition into the season’s next phase.
