Stanford opens new home with ranked win over Oklahoma State

Oklahoma State’s 2026 softball season began with a 4-2 loss to No. 18 Stanford on Thursday night, Feb. 5, in Palo Alto, California, in a matchup that also served as the first game ever played at Stanford Softball Stadium. The contest was the opener for both teams and part of the Stanford Invitational.

Stanford scored first in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by River Mahler and added two more runs in the fifth to build a 3-0 lead. Oklahoma State had chances to answer earlier but left runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and fifth innings.

Pitching, timely hitting and a late Oklahoma State rally

Stanford left-hander Zoe Prystajko struck out a career-high nine batters over 5.2 innings and limited Oklahoma State to four hits while the Cowgirls mounted repeated threats that did not translate into runs until the sixth inning. Oklahoma State senior Ruby Meylan worked into and out of traffic, throwing 113 pitches in the loss.

Oklahoma State’s breakthrough came in the top of the sixth when freshman Jayelle Austin, in her collegiate debut, hit a two-run home run to right field after Claire Timm reached on an infield single. The blast cut Stanford’s lead to 3-2 and brought Oklahoma State within one with four outs remaining.

Stanford responded immediately in the bottom of the sixth, extending the margin to 4-2 on an RBI single by Taryn Kern. Oklahoma State limited further damage by recording an out at home plate to end the inning. Stanford reliever Alyssa Houston then closed the game with a scoreless seventh, retiring the side in order.

Game context: rankings, scheduling and what comes next

The opener was a ranked matchup between a Stanford program coming off an offensively productive 2025 season—one that included multiple program records and another postseason berth—and an Oklahoma State team that entered 2026 ranked No. 24/20 and coming off a 35-20 year with a ninth straight NCAA Regional appearance.

The defeat also marked a change from recent history for Oklahoma State, which had won its previous five season openers. The Stanford Invitational continues through Feb. 7, with Oklahoma State scheduled to face San Jose State and California (twice) before a rematch with Stanford later in the tournament.

  • Final score: Stanford 4, Oklahoma State 2
  • Date/location: Feb. 5, 2026 — Palo Alto, California
  • Notable performances: Prystajko (9 strikeouts); Austin (2-run HR in debut); Kern (3-for-4, 2 runs scored)

Stanford’s win opened the program’s new stadium era with a ranked victory, while Oklahoma State left the opener with a late offensive spark but too few early conversions.
