Public Notice: Holiday Service Updates and Bricktown Canal Maintenance

Holiday Trash and Recycling Schedule Update
Due to the observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 19, the City of Oklahoma City Utilities Department has implemented a holiday makeup schedule. For residents whose regular collection day falls on Monday, service will be provided today, Wednesday, January 21. All residents are reminded to place their 'Big Blue' trash and 'Greenie' recycling bins at the curb no later than 7:00 a.m. to ensure pickup. Normal collection schedules will resume for the remainder of the week. Please note that bulky waste schedules are not affected by this holiday adjustment.
Public Meeting Cancellations
The City Clerk’s Office has announced the cancellation of several public meetings previously scheduled for Wednesday, January 21. The following board and authority sessions will not convene:
- Oklahoma City Urban Renewal Authority
- Oklahoma City Redevelopment Authority
- Port Authority of the Greater Oklahoma City Area
Public records and future agendas for these bodies will be updated on the city’s digital portal. Citizens are encouraged to monitor the official calendar for rescheduled dates as they become available.
Annual Bricktown Canal Maintenance
OKC Parks has initiated the seasonal draining and maintenance of the Bricktown Canal. Starting this week, crews will begin the process of clearing the canal of debris and performing structural inspections. Draining, cleaning, and refilling the canal is estimated to take approximately three and a half weeks, though this timeline may be adjusted based on local weather conditions. Residents and visitors should expect the canal to remain empty and boat tours to be suspended during this period.
Bulky Waste Collection Notice
The Utilities Department is notifying approximately 64,000 residents of upcoming changes to bulky waste collection routes set to begin on March 1, 2026. Postcards are currently being distributed to households within the central corridor, primarily between South I-240 and 122nd Street. These notices will inform residents if their collection day or week has been modified. Residents can also use the interactive map on the city’s utilities website to verify their specific neighborhood schedule ahead of the March transition.
Utility Service Advisory
Regional utility companies have issued a readiness advisory in anticipation of extreme winter weather. Operational teams are on standby to address potential infrastructure issues or power outages caused by freezing conditions. Residents are advised to take standard winter precautions, including protecting outdoor pipes and monitoring official weather channels for further updates.
