Winter Weather Impacts and Municipal Court Closures

Due to the ongoing potential for icy street conditions and freezing temperatures, Presiding Judge Donald O. Kiffin has officially canceled all Oklahoma City Municipal Court sessions for Wednesday, January 28, 2026. This administrative decision was made to ensure the safety of both the public and court personnel during the current winter weather event. All cases originally scheduled for this date will be continued to a later time without the assessment of a continuance fee. Impacted defendants and attorneys will receive formal notification of their new court dates via mail. For general inquiries or to facilitate payments, residents are encouraged to utilize the city’s online portal or contact the Municipal Court administration by phone.

Utilities and Sanitation Services Update

The Oklahoma City Utilities Department has announced a revised schedule for residential services following earlier weather-related disruptions. Trash and recycling collections that were originally scheduled for Monday, January 26, are being completed today, Wednesday, January 28. Residents who missed their Monday pickup are instructed to place their carts at the curb by 5:00 a.m. and leave them out until they are serviced. Additionally, bulky waste collection for the fourth week of January is proceeding as scheduled; however, crews are evaluating conditions in rural areas on a street-by-street basis. The city recommends that residents keep their polycarts house-side if they are not full to help expedite collection for those in greater need.

Public Safety Advisory: Road Conditions and Health Precautions

Public Works crews continue to operate in 12-hour shifts, salting and plowing primary snow routes. A major traffic advisory remains in effect for the I-44 and SH-152 interchange. Eastbound and westbound SH-152 lanes are currently narrowed, and the eastbound I-44 on-ramp from SW 74th Street is closed as part of an ongoing corridor widening project expected to last through Spring 2026. Motorists are warned to be particularly vigilant for black ice on overpasses and bridges during the morning and evening hours when temperatures drop.

In response to the extreme cold, the Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA) has issued a health advisory for residents with pre-existing conditions. Officials recommend staying indoors and specifically advise that medical oxygen tanks be stored in climate-controlled areas, as breathing colder oxygen can be physically taxing for those with respiratory issues.

City Council Transparency: Proposed Processing Facility

Following a marathon session on Tuesday, January 27, the City Council has directed the drafting of a legal memo regarding the federal proposal for a new immigration processing facility at 2800 S. Council Rd. While the Department of Homeland Security manages the project, city leaders are exploring local zoning ordinances and legal pathways to ensure community transparency and safety. A formal briefing for the public is expected to be released once the legal review is complete.
