Sunday Traffic Overview

Drivers in Oklahoma City can expect a relatively light traffic volume this Sunday morning, but significant roadwork on the east and south sides of the metro will require detours. The most impactful update today involves the total closure of major ramps and overpasses along the I-40 corridor, which is expected to cause localized congestion through the evening.

Major Ramp Closures on I-40

As of 6:00 a.m. today, Sunday, February 15, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) has closed all eastbound and westbound I-40 on- and off-ramps at Douglas Boulevard. In addition to the ramp closures, Douglas Boulevard itself is closed to all traffic over I-40 between S.E. 29th Street and Renny Road. These restrictions are part of ongoing surface work and are scheduled to remain in place until approximately 1:00 a.m. Tuesday.

  • Recommended Detour: Commuters are advised to use I-240 or U.S. 62 (N.E. 23rd Street) to bypass the Douglas Boulevard area.
  • Midwest City: Eastbound I-40 remains narrowed to two lanes between I-240 and Town Center Drive. Use extreme caution in this zone as there are currently no shoulders and limited merge distances.

South OKC and Moore Construction

The multi-phase interchange project at I-35 and I-240 continues to impact travel patterns in South Oklahoma City. Both interstates remain narrowed to two lanes near the junction, with no available shoulders in the work zone. Drivers should expect slower speeds when transitioning between these two major arteries.

  • I-44 Corridor: Widening work is active between S.W. 44th Street and I-240. Specifically, the eastbound I-44 on-ramp from S.W. 74th Street is closed today and will remain inaccessible through late February.
  • Moore Railroad Project: S.E. 4th Street (SH-37) remains fully closed between Broadway Avenue and Tower Drive. This is due to long-term railroad bridge construction that is expected to continue through the summer.

Public Transit and Streetcar Alerts

EMBARK public transit is operating on its standard Sunday schedule today. While the OKC Streetcar is running its regular loops today, passengers should take note of a major service change starting later this week. A full four-day suspension of streetcar service is scheduled from February 18 to February 22 to support construction activities for the new arena. For today, however, both the Downtown and Bricktown loops are operating as usual.

Commuter Advice

With clear weather expected, road conditions are generally dry, but the absence of shoulders on I-40 and I-240 makes any minor stall or fender-bender a high-risk for major delays. In Norman, be alert for intermittent lane narrowing on SH-9E near U.S. 77 as bridge replacement work continues over Bishop Creek. Always plan for an additional 10 to 15 minutes of travel time when traversing these active work zones.
