Morning Commute Overview

Commuters in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area should prepare for a challenging drive this Monday, March 2, 2026. A combination of long-term highway reconstruction and local street projects is impacting major arteries. While the morning weather remains clear, heavy congestion is expected throughout the central corridor, particularly where lane narrowing and ramp closures have altered typical traffic patterns.

Major Highway Construction and Lane Restrictions

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) continues several high-priority projects that are causing significant bottlenecks this morning. Drivers should be particularly mindful of the following areas:

  • I-40 in Midwest City: Both eastbound and westbound I-40 remain narrowed to just two lanes in each direction between I-240 and Town Center Drive (Douglas Blvd). Ramps at Douglas Blvd are currently experiencing intermittent closures for surface work. It is highly recommended to use I-240 or US-62/N. 23rd St. as alternative routes to avoid the heavy congestion.
  • I-240 and I-35 Interchange: Lane narrowing remains in effect at the junction of I-240 and I-35 as part of a multi-phase improvement project. Lanes are currently tight with no available shoulders, making any minor accident a major cause for delay. Additionally, the S.E. 74th St. and I-240 Service Road remains closed to through traffic between Eastern Ave. and Crossroads Blvd.
  • I-35 in Edmond: Expect narrowed lanes between Memorial Road and US-77 as crews continue pavement rehabilitation and drainage work. These restrictions are expected to remain through the spring.

Surface Street and Regional Alerts

Beyond the interstates, regional commuters face significant detours. All lanes of SH-152 are closed between Banner Road and Cemetery Road near Union City for total reconstruction. This closure is expected to last through late spring; motorists are advised to detour via US-81 to I-40. In Norman, SH-9E remains narrowed to one lane near US-77 for ongoing bridge replacement over Bishop Creek.

Public Transport and Downtown Navigation

EMBARK has reported several service adjustments for those utilizing public transit. Several stops on Route 011 along S. High Ave and Route 016 on S. Pennsylvania Ave are temporarily closed due to construction and safety repairs. For those heading downtown, the OKC Streetcar remains a viable option and is currently operating under a six-month free service pilot program to encourage ridership during the ongoing arena-related construction.

Looking Ahead: ODOT Commission Meeting

Travelers in the State Capitol area should anticipate higher-than-usual activity around the R.A. Ward Transportation Building on N.E. 21st St. The Oklahoma Transportation Commission is scheduled to meet today at 11 a.m. to discuss future contracts, including the widening of I-35 between I-40 and I-44, which may signal further disruptions in the coming months.
