Streetcar Suspension and Major Interstate Bottlenecks Impact OKC Commute This Thursday

Morning Traffic Overview
Commuters in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area should prepare for several significant disruptions this Thursday, February 26, 2026. A combination of ongoing interstate widening projects and a major public transit service suspension will affect travel times throughout the day. Residents are encouraged to check their routes before heading out and consider alternative paths to avoid the most congested zones.
Public Transit Alert: Streetcar Suspension
EMBARK has confirmed that the Oklahoma City Streetcar service remains temporarily suspended through the end of today, February 26. This interruption is necessary to allow crews to complete critical electrical work related to the construction of the new OKC Arena. During this time, a bus shuttle service is operating as a replacement for all streetcar stops along the Downtown Loop. These shuttles are scheduled to run every 25 minutes, but commuters should note that real-time tracking for these vehicles is currently unavailable. Streetcar service is expected to resume following the completion of today's work.
Major Highway and Interstate Roadworks
Several long-term infrastructure projects continue to restrict traffic flow on the city's primary arteries:
- I-40 (Midwest City): I-40 is narrowed to two lanes in each direction between I-240 and Town Center Drive. This project, which includes lane shifts and intermittent ramp closures, is expected to persist through early 2026. Drivers are advised to use I-240 or US-62/N.E. 23rd Street as detour options.
- I-35 / I-240 Interchange: The multi-phase improvement project at this junction continues to cause delays. I-240 remains narrowed to two lanes at the I-35 interchange. Additionally, the S.E. 74th Street/I-240 Service Road is closed to through traffic between Eastern Avenue and Crossroads Boulevard.
- I-44 Bridge Work: The east and westbound I-44 off-ramps to N.W. 10th Street remain closed for a city bridge project. This closure is scheduled to last through the summer of 2026.
Surface Street and Regional Updates
Beyond the interstates, several key state highways and local streets are seeing reduced capacity:
- SH-152: All lanes remain closed between Banner Road and Cemetery Road for total reconstruction. Commuters should utilize US-81 to I-40 as a primary detour.
- N.E. 23rd Street: Expect intermittent lane narrowing between Broadway Avenue and Western Avenue due to an ongoing streetscape project in partnership with the City of Oklahoma City.
- Moore/Yukon: In Moore, SH-37 (S.E. 4th Street) is closed between Broadway Avenue and Tower Drive for railroad bridge work. In Yukon, Garth Brooks Boulevard is restricted to one lane in each direction under I-40 for resurfacing.
Drivers are reminded to stay alert in work zones and expect slower-than-normal speeds in these construction areas as crews work to improve the city's infrastructure.
