Commuter Alert: Significant Highway Bottlenecks

Oklahoma City commuters should prepare for a slow Tuesday morning as several multi-year infrastructure projects reach critical phases this February. The most significant impacts are concentrated in the southern and western portions of the metro. On I-44, the corridor between S.W. 44th St. and I-240 remains heavily restricted due to ongoing widening and bridge rehabilitation. Notably, the eastbound I-44 on-ramp from S.W. 74th St. is currently closed, and the interstate itself is narrowed to a single lane in that area through late February. Drivers frequenting Airport Road/SH-152 will also encounter narrowed lanes at the I-44 junction through the spring.

The I-35 and I-240 interchange continues to be a major pinch point for South Oklahoma City and Moore residents. Travelers can expect narrowed lanes with no shoulders on I-240 at the I-35 junction. Additionally, the S.E. 74th St. and I-240 service road is closed to through traffic between Eastern Ave. and Crossroads Blvd. as part of the multi-phase interchange improvement project scheduled to last through the end of the year.

Surface Street Closures and Ramp Restrictions

Beyond the interstates, several key arterial roads are facing construction-related delays:

  • Midtown/Innovation District: N.E. 23rd St. (SH-66) is narrowed to one lane in each direction between N. Lee Ave. and N. Harvey Ave. This restriction is expected to remain in place through early February.
  • West OKC: The east and westbound I-44 off-ramps to N.W. 10th St. are currently closed and will remain inaccessible through summer 2026 to facilitate a city bridge project.
  • Moore: S.E. 4th St. remains fully closed between Broadway Ave. and Tower Dr. for a railroad bridge replacement project.
  • Yukon and Edmond: In Yukon, Garth Brooks Blvd. is limited to one lane under I-40. In Edmond, the intersection of Danforth Rd. and Kelly Ave. remains narrowed for expansion work.

Public Transit Updates and Alternate Routes

For those looking to avoid highway congestion, EMBARK transit is operating on a standard Tuesday schedule. The Northwest RAPID transit line has resumed regular service frequencies following late-January delays. Additionally, the OKC Streetcar is currently participating in a fare-free pilot program, offering complimentary service to all riders through early summer 2026. Commuters traveling from the south are encouraged to use I-40 as an alternate to I-240 where possible to bypass the heavy work zones at the I-35 interchange.
