Winter Weather Detours and Highway Closures: OKC Saturday Commute Alert

Winter Weather Detours and Highway Closures: OKC Saturday Commute Alert
As of Saturday, January 31, 2026, Oklahoma City commuters and weekend travelers are advised to exercise extreme caution due to ongoing winter weather recovery and significant long-term construction projects affecting major arteries. While city crews continue snow removal and salting operations, several transit and roadway restrictions remain in effect to ensure public safety across the metro area.
Public Transportation and EMBARK Alerts
EMBARK has maintained Level 2 Winter Weather Detours for Oklahoma City bus services, including the RAPID NW line. These detours are implemented when road conditions on secondary streets remain hazardous for heavy transit vehicles. Riders should expect potential delays and check official service alerts for a complete list of closed stops. In Norman, regular transit service has largely resumed, though local delays may still occur. The Oklahoma City Streetcar continues to operate on its regular schedule today; however, officials note that the streetcar will run overnight without passengers to keep the tracks clear of ice and snow buildup. Notably, streetcar rides remain free to the public through July 5.
Major Highway and Interchange Restrictions
Major infrastructure projects continue to impact highway travel throughout the metro. On I-44, the east and westbound off-ramps to NW 10th St. are completely closed. This closure is expected to remain in place through summer 2026 for a bridge reconstruction project. Drivers should utilize alternate exits to reach the Fairgrounds or surrounding neighborhoods. In South Oklahoma City, the multi-phase interchange project at I-240 and I-35 has reduced I-240 to two narrow lanes in both directions. There are currently no shoulders in this zone, and motorists are urged to use I-40 as an alternate route to avoid significant congestion. Additionally, I-40 in Midwest City remains narrowed to two lanes in each direction between I-240 and Town Center Drive due to the Douglas Blvd. bridge replacement and interchange reconstruction.
Regional Roadworks and Local Closures
Several arterial roads and regional highways are also seeing restricted movement today:
- Moore: SH-37 (SE 4th St.) is closed between Broadway Ave. and Tower Dr. through summer 2026 for a railroad bridge project.
- Edmond: The intersection of Danforth Rd. and Kelly Ave. remains narrowed to one lane in each direction for expansion work.
- Yukon: Garth Brooks Blvd. is limited to one lane in each direction under I-40 for ongoing resurfacing.
- Union City: SH-152 is closed at Banner Rd. for full reconstruction; a detour via US-81 to I-40 is recommended.
Commuter Safety Advice
For those who must be on the roads today, public works officials encourage staying on designated snow routes where plowing and salting are prioritized. Maintain a distance of at least 200 feet from salt and plow trucks. For real-time updates on accidents and injury reports, residents are encouraged to use the city’s digital accident tracker before departing. If you become stranded, attempt to move your vehicle off the roadway to allow emergency and maintenance crews to pass safely.
