Morning Commute Alert: Black Ice and Winter Detours

Oklahoma City commuters should exercise extreme caution this Thursday morning, January 29, 2026. Following recent winter weather, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) has issued a warning regarding black ice. Roads that appeared wet during the daylight hours have likely frozen over, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and shaded surface streets. Local authorities urge drivers to check the Drive Oklahoma app before heading out and to allow significantly more time for travel than usual.

Public Transit Service Level Changes

EMBARK has officially activated Level 2 Winter Weather Detours for OKC Bus and RAPID NW services. These detours are designed to keep transit vehicles on treated primary roads and away from steep hills or difficult-to-navigate side streets. Passengers should anticipate delays and are encouraged to check the EMBARK service alerts for a full list of temporarily closed bus stops. Norman Bus services and the 100X commuter route from Edmond are also operating under weather-related restrictions, with some stops in downtown Oklahoma City limited to major hubs like the State Capitol and the transit center.

Specific Mid-Day Roadwork and Lane Closures

Beyond the weather, several short-term maintenance projects are scheduled for today that will create bottlenecks during off-peak hours:

  • I-44 Westbound: The highway will be narrowed to a single lane at Kelly Ave. from 9:00 a.m. to noon for safety device repairs.
  • I-40 Eastbound (Yukon): The off-ramp to Garth Brooks Blvd. will be closed from 10:00 a.m. to noon for utility repairs conducted by OG&E.
  • I-35 Southbound: Expect lane reductions to one lane at NW 36th St. between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. for bridge safety maintenance.
  • I-35 Northbound: Nightly work continues between Wilshire Blvd. and Hefner Rd. for sign installation, with lanes narrowing starting at 8:00 p.m. tonight.

Major Ongoing Construction Projects

Long-term infrastructure projects continue to affect major arteries across the metro area. On I-240 at the I-35 interchange, lanes remain narrowed to two in each direction with no shoulders, and the SE 74th St. service road is closed between Eastern Ave. and Crossroads Blvd. In Midwest City, I-40 remains narrowed to two lanes near Douglas Blvd. with intermittent ramp closures. Additionally, in Moore, SH-37 (SE 4th St.) is fully closed at Broadway Ave. for a railroad bridge project, requiring drivers to use 4th St. or 12th St. as alternates.
